PLEASE pretty PLEASE leave reviews every time you read a book! It really can be this simple and you help each author whose book you review, especially those with few reviews, no large publisher behind us, and a need for honest readers’ comments! Thanks, Kawanee Hamilton, for creating and posting, and thanks to ALL readers who review!

I always question my book reviews. I know what I like and I don’t like. I tend to give positive reviews because I read what I like. I’m wondering if this is not doing a disservice to those writers that couldn’t continue with their book. What I’ve done in the past is just tell them the book wasn’t for me. It’s no help to the writer, but it keeps me from telling someone the book sucks. What do you do?

    1. I review honestly but rate what I consider fairly. If I can’t get past the first page it’s BAD and deserves a bad rating. If it’s good or needs something I give it a fair rating and try to contact the author via facebook or something private and share suggestions or tell her/him where they lost me. If I can’t do it privately then I try to offer constructive criticism in a positive way, or as you do I will also say: It wasn’t for me.

  3. I really began reviewing books in earnest in August of 2014 when I got frustrated with the lack of sales of my two self-published books; and needed something to occupy my time since I saw no need to continue working on my 2 WIPs [works in progress]. Since then I’ve reviewed 226 books on Amazon, which I’ve also posted on GoodReads / LibraryThing / Shelfari, as well as my two blog sites. I must have become quite good at it since the ranking I’ve got on Amazon is now at 5,625.

The above post thing gives the how to in its most simplest form there is a lot more which should be considered when attempting to a good review. One of the books I’ve reviewed deals precisely with this topic, it’s entitled “How To Write a Simple Book Review: It’s easier than you think” by Allison R. Abbott

    1. I hope you didn’t give up on your books! I too am frustrated with my lack of sales but I’m learning and I’m too stubborn to give up.

Thank you for recommending a more in depth book on reviewing. I posted this in hopes that maybe someone would start reviewing using the simple form and gain confidence as they do.

Sometimes people just need a nudge and a little direction. 🙂

  4. That’s precisely why I posted my reply.
If your readers read the I wrote, I believe it should give them a decent idea of what a review should look like,
While my WIPS they’re still on the back burner, I’ve started to write a novelette in which I’m trying to step out of my comfort zone by writing something in the GLBT erotic genre.

Author Co-op is a really good one and it’s not genre specific. You’ll have everything from hard core erotic to children’s authors and beyond. They are full of great advice as well.

Anything I can do to help! I’m happy to do it. 🙂

  5. Great way to remind readers to review. Reviews are what authors crave and anxiously wait to read. It gives us a feeling of accomplishment even if not all of them are positive. We learn from our mistakes and persevere. Thank you for posting this. I hope more people will review.
Blessings of the season to you!
